Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni says his government has enough funds to support farmers who are serious.
He says that such farmers would be helped to access low interest loans through their local Savings and Credit Co-operative organizations (SACCOs).
The President was addressing local leaders from Busoga region whom he met yesterday at the YWCA in Jinja Municipality.
He urgedpeople to embark on the modernization of agriculture through numerous farming projects. He observed that if people produce in masses, the country will move from agricultural to industrial status because the diverse products they realize will help in attracting processors for value addition to those products. He said that this will also form a basis for more employment opportunities for the people.Mr. Museveni urged leaders to teach the people they lead to engage in enterprises that are high yielding adding that they should be encouraged to concentrate on crops that have a high demand on both local and international markets. He told them that fruits, vegetables, eggs, fish and honey have high market value. He also warned local leaders in his country to stop using personal money for development of infrastructure and services in their respective areas.
Mr. Museveni warned leaders that they should not use their little money to build roads, bridges, schools and other infrastructure because the government is responsible for these tasks and assured them that it has the capacity to accomplish them. He said that putting their personal resources in the development of infrastructure will make them sink into debts and poverty adding that this will be seen as a sign of failure on the part of the leaders to mobilize and sensitize people on government development programmes.
